Over the years Portugal has been one of our top selling motorcycling destinations.  Good accommodation, local food, a mild climate and a surprising array of great roads to ride make it popular destination throughout the year!  There are budget airlines operating to Porto from most UK airports so it's ideal as a fly ride destination - whether for a short weekend break or for a longer tour.

The Douro Valley could easily be called the enchanted valley, such is the beauty and magic that its landscape offers.

Departing from Porto, where the river flows into the sea and where the Douro wine (table wines and Port wine), produced on its hillsides are transported, commence your motorcycle ride and get to know this cultural landscape which is a listed World Heritage Site.  Following a route between the viewpoints that offer the best vistas, you will cross the river from north to south and back again.  Along the way you can admire breathtaking landscapes over the river and vineyards, towns and villages all the way to Miranda do Douro where the river enters Portugal from Spain.  As you meander along look out for the old "rabelo" boats which carried the wine from the quintas where it was produced to the mouth of river at Vila Nova de Gaia.

From our base in Regua, where you will find the Douro Museum, you can easily cross to the south bank of the river to Lamego located at the base of an immense blue and white tiled flight of steps (see photo).  Heading eastwards you will see picturesque Pinhao, Pocinho with its castle, the Vale de Coa Archaelogical park with its open-air rock art gallery which is a World Heritage Site, as far as Barca de Alva and the International Douro National Park.  And all these lovely sights against the stunning backdrop of the Douro Valley.

Day 1 Take an early flight from your local airport. Make your way to our local motorcycle company located in Porto centre and after some paperwork you can set off on your travels.  Spare luggage can be left with the bike hire company for storage at the depot.  To save time your bike can be delivered to the airport for a small fee. Then you will find yourself very quickly on the banks of the Douro and the start of your ride along the gorgeous Douro Valley.  As an alternative if you have a later flight we an arrange an additional night in Porto near the bike hire depot so that you can enjoy a full day of riding.

Our base for three nights is a four star hotel located directly on the Douro river and a great place from which to explore the unspoilt countryside of this beautiful part of northern Portugal appropriately described by writer Miguel Torga as "geological poetry".  The hotel has 77 air-conditioned rooms, some of them with river view (supplement applies), a panoramic restaurant, bar, outdoor swimming pool (sesonal) and motorcycle parking.  Enjoy a glass of Vinho Verde or port wine from the hotel bar over looking the river.  The Douro Valley Wine region is the oldest demarcated wine region in the world where the grapes are harvested from the deep valley carved by the river where the vines bask in the rays of the sun and wine making skills have been passed on from one generation to the next.  River cruises start at the pier only 50m from the hotel and the Regua train station has direct a connection to Porto.

Days 2 & 3 - At lesiure.  Whilst based here you can ride out following curves along the river, through undulating terrain, past Moorish castles. Our prepared routes will take you out on uncluttered roads where you are more likely to encounter cows and sheep rather than oncoming traffic - enjoy the views, enjoy the ride and enjoy the friendly hospitality of the locals for this is really what this tour is all about!

Day 4 - It's time to leave after breakfast and start the journey home.  Depending on your flight time take a direct route back to drop off the bike and head straight back to the airport , explore Porto a little or enjoy a scenic return ride. Accommodation can be arranged in central Porto near the bike rental depot if required.
