Great hotels throughout

This tour starts and finishes in the Derbyshire spa town of Buxton, using 4 star hotels or characterful country inns. Using well researched local knowledge, we will be following the route of the Pennine Way as closely as we can, using routes well off the beaten track through the Peak District National Park, the Yorkshire Dales National Park, North Pennines AONB, the Kielderhead National Nature Reserve, taking in a full day ride-out in the Lake District National Park on the return leg, and finishing off back in Buxton via the Forest of Bowland AONB.

Day one takes us from our 4 star hotel at Buxton to the northern edge of the Yorkshire Dales, taking in Ladybower reservoir, pretty little Hebden Bridge, Howarth and Malham, through Coverdal and Swaledale along the way. We will be staying in a lovely country inn with dinner from a kitchen that serves Yorkshire food with a modern twist, sourced locally and seasonally as much as possible, with some local beers available too. A fantastic way to end a brilliant day!

After a wonderful cooked breakfast we will head north again on day 2, past the highest pub in England at Tan Hill, crossing Hadrian's Wall at Hayden Bridge, up to Keilder (where we can do the 12 mile forest drive on unsealed tracks for a £3 toll) entering Scotland at Carter Bar, to spend our third night in a 4 star hotel in the Scottish borders. Marvelous!

Having reached our most northerly point on this tour, day 3 sees us head south west to our 4 star hotel in Penrith, meandering around Peebles, Eskdalemuir, Moffat, Langholm and Alston en route. Staying at this hotel for two nights means there is the option to spend day 4 off the bikes to relax, or to come with us on a full day ride-out through the Lake District. First we will loop round Underbarrow and then cross Windermere on the ferry, to Langdale and over Park Road pass, Wrynose Pass, Hardnott Pass, go up the coast to Calder Bridge, then Buttermere, Newlands Pass, down Borrowdale for Honister Pass, Winlatter Pass, and through Keswick back to our hotel at Penrith. What a day!

Day 5 takes us through Hawes to Ingleton (via Ribblehead viaduct), through Gisburn Forest via Stocks Reservoir, Hebden Bridge once more, skirting the west side of Huddersfield to re-enter the Peak District National Park near Holme Moss, and via Glossop back to our starting point at Buxton. No doubt we will spend the last evening reliving the highlights of the last few days riding, enjoying a beverage or two with freinds old and new before (and possibly after) dinner. I am sure we will all sleep well.

Around 850 miles in total, so an average daily mileage of only 170 miles, but using lots of minor roads we will still enjoy full days of riding. The Peaks, the Dales, North Yorkshire, the Borders, the Lakes and the Trough of Bowland are wonderful motorcycling playgrounds, and our route will allow us to enjoy the space and scenery these regions offer.
