Battlefields, D-Day Landings and Rouen

If you want to explore northern France and do not want to travel too far then this is an ideal "starter" tour. We will combine an informative weekend touring the Battlefields of the Somme with a visit later in the week to Bayeux. Not only can you see the Bayeux Tapestry but we will take you along the coast to Arromanches, scene of the D-Day landings. It was here, in a wide but shallow bay that Winston Churchill authorised the building of an artificial harbour to land the munitions and supplies for the big push against the entrenched German positions. It's remarkable to see the Mulberries just off the coast - these were concrete barges towed across the English Channel in a massive covert operation, then lashed together to form a floating landing stage. Designed to last just six months, the Mulberries are still there over 65 years later! This coastline merits further investigation and a motorcycle makes an ideal touring vehicle as you stop here and there to look at long-abandoned coastal defences, gun emplacements, the occasional field gun or Sherman tank strategically placed at intersections to remind visitors of the carnage that was World War Two. And just a bit further is the American Cemetery with it's strictly geometric headstones - a sobering reminder of the sacrifices made by a generation of US soldiers who fought here in the European theatre to secure our freedom.

At the weekend we join our friends arriving from the UK to stay in the Cathedral City of Rouen. It's a very pretty place full of olde worlde half-timbered buildings. A great place to explore and a base for our rides out into the local countryside. You are welcome to join our rides out and to be assessed by our motorcycle training specialist - maybe a few pointers to get more out of your motorcycle and improve your riding technique?

It promises to be a very full week but the mileages will not be heavy. And if you know where to look there  really is plenty to see in Normandy and northern France!

This tour will suit first time riders abroad and/or those with an interest in the major global conflicts of the last century.
