To ride the length of the Baja Peninsula the tour starts in San José del Cabo, Mexico at the most southerly point of Baja and finishes in Long Beach, California. Immerse yourself in Mexican flavours, culture, and tradition, with the additional highlight of a boat trip to see Gray Whales and their calves up close and personal in their breeding grounds.
San José del Cabo itself is a lovely little town, and well worth taking an extra night in before we depart. From there it is up to La Paz, a bustling coastal town with a modern seafront, yet local fishermen bring their catches in all along the beach. At Lorretto our hotel is right on the beach, from where you can wander into town for sustenance and entertainment, before heading up to San Ignacio the following day. We have a day off the bikes here to take a boat out onto the lagoon where Whales come to calf, and they will often come right alongside the boat to show off their young. From there it is over to the east coast, to Bahía de los Ángeles and our hotel right on the beach overlooking the Sea of Cadiz, and the chance to go snorkelling with Whale Sharks (it's OK, they have no teeth). Our last night in Mexico is on the west coast at San Quintin (no, not the jail in the song) and again a beachfront hotel where you can watch the sun go down over the Pacific ocean.
After riding over 1,000 miles of Mexican mountains, deserts and coastlines it is time to cross the boarder into the USA, to spend 8 days looping around the mountains, forests and deserts of California and Nevada including the Joshua Tree National Park , the gold rush section of Route 66, Las Vegas for 2 nights (take a flight into/over the Grand Canyon or perhaps ride out to Lake Mead and the Hoover Dam), Death Valley, Sequoia National Park and the Sierra Nevada Mountains, before riding the famous Angeles Crest Highway back to Long Beach.
The price is based on the hire of a Suzuki 650 V-Strom, but there are Harley Ultra & Street Glide, BMW GS700/800/1200, and Honda Africa Twin bikes available too for an extra charge, but supply is limited so get in quick if you want one of these options. All the while we will be accompanied by a motorcycle specific support vehicle whose driver has knowledge of route and familiarity with basic repairs on the motorcycles. This vehicle will be equipped with
Tyre repair equipment • Ice, snacks and drinks in the cooler • Tools and commonly needed spare parts • Generator • Air Compressor • Basic first aid kit • Satellite phone • Trailer • Spare motorcycle (650 V-Strom or better)
This is a great opportunity to visit a spectacular and unique part of the world. All accommodation has been carefully selected, and while we have booked the best that is available in some places (with a number of our stays being right on the beach) be aware that in the middle of Baja the choice is limited, athough they will always be welcoming, friendly and helpful. Your MCi Tour guides will ride with you throughout the tour and offer you the benefit of their help and advice.
